I qualified as an occupational therapist (BSc Hons) from Ulster University in 2015. I started off working as a community occupational therapist before specialising in neuro occupational therapy and have been within neuro settings since 2016. I specialised in Neuro and worked in St George's University Hospital in London until moving back to Northern Ireland in 2022.
Across my career as a specialist and highlight specialist occupational therapist in neuro it involved working in the following units; neurorehabilitation, functional neurological disorder rehabilitation, neurology, neuro intensive care, neurosurgery, stroke and neuro-cardiac. As team lead within neurosurgical and neurology regional units, I developed my expertise in working with individuals with acquired brain injuries such as stroke, traumatic brain injuries, (including post disorders of consciousness), spinal cord injuries, functional neurological disorder, neuro-oncology disorders and progressive neurological conditions (such as Parkinson's and motor neurone disease).
Over the years, I have developed my skills and competencies through supervision, research, service development, attendance at specialist training and postgraduate modules. This includes cognitive and perceptual rehab training, bobath, sensory integration, behaviour management, thermoplastic splinting, soft and scotch casting, seating and postural management, bridges self-management and PDOC management.
I enjoy working with individuals and their support networks to achieve their goals, maximise their function and engage in meaningful activities. My aim is to maximise an individual's potential to do what they want to do and focus on activities/interventions that contribute to an improved quality of life.
