Since beginning my career in 2011 I have worked within the NHS, charitable organisations and private healthcare organisations. I have worked in a variety of different inpatient and community settings which include A&E, acute medical wards, stroke inpatient rehabilitation, specialist level 1 brain injury units, specialist nursing homes, care homes and individual’s homes.
I support adults and adolescents with a variety of neurological conditions such as brain injury, stroke and progressive neurological conditions. I work with a range of individuals with varying levels of physical and cognitive needs.
I have experience in assessing and treating people who have high levels of cognitive impairments, supporting individuals to improve their independence in functioning within their own environment. This may include community re-integration and a focus on the skills required in preparation for returning to work.
I have a specialist interest and am highly experienced in the assessment and management of individuals in a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness. I am an accredited assessor in the Sensory Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation Technique (SMART). I am experienced and skilled in complex postural management, including, upper limb assessment and management, spasticity management and seating/ wheelchairs. I assess and set-up 24-hour postural management programmes, make recommendations for optimal posture to aide function, maintain comfort and prevent further deformities.
I devise individual sensory programmes to elicit functional potential and set up cognitive rehabilitation programmes to support individuals to reach their goals. My skill set includes providing education and training to support workers, carers and families.
In 2017 I gained further qualifications and valuable skills in an emerging occupational therapy role as a ward manager within a 22 bed unit of a specialist nursing home at the Royal Hospital for Neuro Disability, providing specialist care for individuals in a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness and severe brain injury.
I am committed to continued professional development and have presented service development initiatives at the Royal College of Occupational Therapy Annual conference in 2019 and 2017. In 2022 I presented to occupational therapy students as a guest lecturer at the University of East Anglia and University of Essex.
