The St Andrews Practice

I have worked in wide range of clinical specialities and from 2014 to May 2021, in a adult autism (cognitively able) consultancy service. I am trained in the application of Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication disOrder (DISCO) standardised assessment tool for diagnosis of autism.

I have discovered that working in neurodiversity is a good match with my skills and interests. Having my own diagnosis of ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia means that I have a good understanding of the challenges people face and how a strengths based approach is the best way to support people to reach their full potential. I always aim to work collaboratively with individuals, to develop creative solutions based on the person's preferences, skills and from an understanding of what has and what has not worked for them in the past.

I have developed programmes for autism, ADHD and sensory. These provide a framework to help people to identify and choose relevant topics depending on their specific needs or interests, however I use a flexible approach and my input is guided by individuals needs rather than specific topics. The details of these programmes are available on the St Andrews Practice website.

I qualified as an advanced sensory integration practitioner in 2017. This is an evidence based practice and individuals that I have used this approach with have achieved significant changes in their abilities to manage the challenges in everyday life. It can be revolutionary to realise that experiences of anxiety (flight/fight responses) come from movement and other sensory input particularly for those who are neurodiverse. I believe that developing an understanding of the sensory differences experienced, and the impact on emotional regulation is essential; sensory has become a core aspect of my practice.

I have receive very positive feedback, particularly in relation to the difference understanding sensory responses and experiences has made to individuals. The following are direct quote from emails received from two clients:

"I have found the exercise before bed effective and noticed in particular one physical stressor that actually has nothing to do with what I thought it was, which is a relief. I appreciate the insight you gave me in our last session."

“It really helps having a visual plan. I’ve already found myself becoming a bit more aware of where I am on the ladder, and it’s comforting to have methods for managing my symptoms “.

I am currently on a training programme with the National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR), which is focused on effective Return to Work and Disability Management in the workplace. This was in recognition of a growing number of individuals looking for support to remain or return to the workplace.
