Qualified Occupational Therapist and Therapeutic Play Practitioner. Over 20 years experience working in a variety of mental health settings including CAMHS and using play therapeutically in primary schools. Working as an Occupational Therapist is something I have always felt passionately about. I adopt an empowering, person-centered approach, viewing participation in occupations as essential for maintaining and enhancing emotional-wellbeing. Some therapeutic approaches in mental health rely on awareness of thoughts and feelings and an ability to express them verbally. I noticed that many adults struggle with this and wondered how we could have this expectation of children and young people. Using play therapeutically fits so naturally with being an OT, what better way to help children express themselves than through their primary occupation and natural language of play? I am excited by creative ways of emotional exploration and self-expression and the idea that 'tell me about it' is so much more than verbal.
