Melissa Spurling-Purkis I have worked in the field of Paediatric Occupational Therapy for over 10 years; in a variety of settings assessing and treating children of all ages, with a wide range of conditions and difficulties. I became and Occupational Therapist, because when a child discovers something new for the first time and does this independently, it is truly magical. For me, the most important part of my role is to build trust and rapport with children and their support networks. Enabling children to play and use their imagination and get into the state of flow is my goal, this is where we learn! I am always thinking of different ways to use a child’s interests to engage them and most importantly make it fun.
Since graduating in 2015 I have completed many courses, these include Developmental Trauma Training with Beacon House and I am currently studying a post-graduate course in Collaborative Leadership in Ayres Sensory Integration (CLASI). I have also completed training in Motivational Interviewing, Alert Programme, Sensory Circuits, Zones of Regulation and Makaton.
I work at Starjumpz Brighton. Starjumpz is an independent multidisciplinary children’s centre with locations in Crowborough and Brighton. We provide a holistic approach to helping children with learning, neurodevelopmental, sensory, motor, behavioural and/or attachment difficulties, and supports families and schools. Starjumpz services include; Paediatric Diagnostic Assessment, Neurofeedback Treatment, Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, ADHD and Autism screening, Play Therapy, Counselling, Psychotherapy and Nutrition.
