I work with individuals/groups to engage in their goal directed occupations (occupational participation) to achieve full participation so that they become the person they want to be (occupational engagement).
Occupational therapy techniques:
Activity analysis - activities are not just physical; they can also be social, cognitive and emotional. Establishing different ways to manage activities enables a person to improve their function, through grading, adaptations/equipment that might be beneficial.
Occupational balance - enabling a person to find a balance of occupations, engaging in a range of activities they consider productive, nurturing, pleasurable and restful. Identifying activities that a person is no longer able to perform and a plan to achieve these.
Occupational flow - finding an activity that is so enjoyable that the total emersion in this activity supports rehabilitation and healing (as part of their balanced diary of activities).
Approaches and Models of practice:
Biopsychosocial model - attention to biological, psychological and social factors in the management of symptoms, combining different techniques.
Cognitive behavioural approach - inviting the person to consider how a different thinking style can impact differently on their behaviours - leading to improvement in function and symptoms.
Adaptive approach - identifying alternative techniques to achieve a task (eg using a towelling bathrobe straight out of the bath/shower to wrap in rather than using a towel to dry).
Vocational rehabilitation - addressing the person’s abilities and the tasks required in their job, and working environment.
