Mary qualified in 1982 (before OT training was a degree course). Her career has followed a paediatric path ever since, in the NHS, Education and Private Practice.
She works with children who are struggling to access the ordinary things in life, that is playing, learning and becoming independent.
She has an analytical approach to understanding the challenges that interrupt typical development and she uses her sensory processing knowledge and experience to identify difficulties with sensory issues, motor -coordination, perceptual development and how all this is wrapped up together in a child who is struggling to manage their own behaviour, their learning and with getting on with the business of just being a child.
She works with children with and without diagnoses such as autism, dyspraxia, learning difficulties, neurological differences.
She offers detailed assessment, written report, advice and support.
Every assessment begins by getting to know the child through the eyes of their parents/carers. She aims to empower both the child and their parents, carers and educators to bring that child on in their development, to manage their sensory difficulties and to access their daily life.
Assessment includes both formal and informal assessment and observations in the child's natural settings. She aims to work collaboratively with those around the child and extends her advice to the wider team important in a child's development. Her reports can be used to support EHC plans.
Collaboration and detailed discussion enable assessments to be meaningful. She has used a consultative model of practice for many years and worked through other people to learn about and support children with complex difficulties.
