Jo graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy from London South Bank University in 2007 and has had over 10 years specialising in paediatrics.
Jo works for the NHS in Surrey and independently in London and Surrey. Previously Jo worked in London in an NHS team managed by the eminent occupational therapist (OT) Dr Sidney Chu, providing Jo with a high standard of training and experience.
Jo founded Children's Occupational Therapy Epsom to facilitate a better work life balance with her two young children.
Jo provides specialist comprehensive OT assessment and bespoke therapy recommendations/ packages.
Jo’s OT assessment uses expert knowledge of child development and paediatric conditions to analyse why a child is having difficulty with everyday activities. For children these everyday activities/ occupations include; self-care, leisure, handwriting, scissor use, gross motor skills etc.
Clinical reasoning is used to consider and plan how functionally a child can increase or maintain independence with motor skills, using strategies, adaptive techniques and education.
OT uses a holistic approach considering the child, their environment and their occupation. That is why Jo assesses and provides therapy in a child’s own environment, school or home, this helps integrate strategies and recommendations. Latest research evidence supports this approach.
Jo believes in the importance of multi-disciplinary working. Sharing of information, where relevant, is encouraged, supported by research multi-disciplinary working increases positive outcomes for children, empowering those working with the child.
As well as comprehensive assessment and therapy packages to individuals Jo also works with statutory services and contributes to diagnostic assessments.
• Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans assessment and therapy provision in schools and nurseries. Jo has ongoing work in this area commissioned by local education authorities.
• Assessment to contribute to the diagnostic criteria for Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) in conjunction with a Developmental Paediatrician.
DCD, a delay in the development of motor skills results in a child’s inability to perform everyday tasks well. Standardised and non- standardised assessments are administered to ascertain if motor skills are below that expected of the child’s chronological age and if they are impacting on daily function. Paediatrician assessment will rule out any neurological impairment to make the final diagnosis.
• Sensory Profile assessments to contribute to the diagnostic assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a multi-disciplinary assessment led by a Developmental Paediatrician.
Jo is registered with the Health Care Professions Council. Jo actively engages in continuing professional development to ensure best and effective practice and is a member of The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) and The RCOT Children, Young People and Families Specialist Section.
Jo has completed post graduate training in sensory integration.
