I have been working as an Occupational Therapist in both the NHS and private sector since graduating in 2000. I have worked within outpatients and inpatient in Child and Adolescent Mental Services (CAMHS)and Adult mental health settings for over 20 years, both in the UK and Australia. I draw on many years' experiences supervising occupational therapists, students and other clinicians in a range of clinical settings. I have clinical training in group therapy, CBT based interventions, neurodevelopmental assessments including ADOS trained as well as my Occupational Therapy skills. I have broad experience dealing with a range of issues within the mental health setting throughout my career and more recently within private practice in working specifically with children and young adults with neurodevelopmental issues.
Through my own working experience, I came to realise the importance of clinical supervision and having a supervisor with relevant experience in your field of work. I have been lucky to have regular supervision throughout my career, someone to discuss my caseload, brainstorm ideas with, offer validation and to discuss the everchanging role of OT and the barriers we come up against within our workplace!
Clinical and professional supervision is an opportunity to reflect on priorities, ensure ongoing professional development and work on your own development plans and goals for the future.
More recently I have realised that there are a lot of OTs out there either not receiving regular professional supervision or not getting this from another qualified OT within their service. Supervision appears to less prioritised as the pressures within the NHS are increasing and I feel very strongly that this shouldn’t be the case. This has motivated me to offer my experience to others who wish to have a regular professional supervisor whether online or in person.
