I have worked as an Occupational Therapist for 16 years, 8 of which have been in Hand Therapy. Prior to specialising in hands, I worked predominantly in the clinical setting of trauma and orthopaedics. In addition to working in Independent Practice, I continue to work as a Specialist Occupational Therapist in the local NHS hand unit. As a result, I have significant experience in managing a wide range of traumatic injuries which include simple and complex fractures of the hand and wrist, tendon repairs, nerve repairs, ligament injuries, crush injuries, terminalisation and replantation and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Additionally, I have experience in the management of acquired conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendinopathies, compression neuropathies (carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes) and Dupuytren's contracture.
The assessment process aims to identify how the injury/condition is affecting your daily life. It will often involve investigating the movement, strength, sensation and dexterity of the hand. It may also consider how pain levels and patterns affect you during the day. This information is used to formulate a list of problems and goals on which to base the treatment programme. N.B. If required, this assessment may be completed in your home or work setting to identify specific issues you may be having.
Depending upon need, treatment programmes may involve thermoplastic or soft splinting, joint mobilisations and stretches, range of movement exercise programmes and strength/conditioning programmes. They may also include advice on scar management, desensitisation and sensory re-education. I am also able to offer support and guidance in the therapeutic management of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Again, the treatment programme may be completed in your home or work setting to incorporate the activities that are meaningful to you into your rehabilitation. Where indicated, I am also able to provide practical advice on compensatory approaches, aids and adaptions.
