Aisling van der Walt's profile

Aisling van der Walt Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy (Honours) from National University of Ireland Galway

Aisling van der Walt

Aisling started her occupational therapy career with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrookes Hospital) where she began to specialise in neurology. She moved to London in 2013 as a senior occupational therapist in neurorehabilitation (Wellington Hospital, largest private rehabilitation hospital in UK). She extended her training to include Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), cognitive rehabilitation, Saebo Ltd Rehabilitation, mirror therapy, functional electrical stimulation (FES), thermoplastic splinting for the neurologically impaired upper limb, assessing for lycra garments / dynamic movement orthosis, specialist postural assessment and wheelchair prescription.

Aisling has been an independent practitioner since 2015 and conducts private work alongside her role as a Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery - a well-recognised centre of excellence in neurology. She has also held contract roles in various rehabilitation settings in London, including as a neurotherapy team lead (Barnet Hospital), a specialist neuro OT (Royal Hospital for Neurodisability Putney) and in community neurorehabilitation (St Georges NHS Foundation Trust). Maintaining links with public and private sectors ensures Aisling remains current with best practice and establishes strong links with other specialist services.

She believes in a practical approach with sessions focused on addressing clients’ day-to-day difficulties clients (eg dressing, writing, feeding, returning to work). She can recommend equipment, adaptations or rehabilitative strategies to help clients achieve greater independence; fabricate thermoplastic splints in a client's own home and has specialist knowledge in postural assessment. Depending on need, therapy can be conducted in the home, workplace, community or school.

Aisling also undertakes medico legal work and accepts instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. She has undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and is fully aware of responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
